The 1st U.S. Colored Infantry was a regiment of the United States Army during the American Civil War, composed primarily of African American soldiers. Established in August 1862 as part of the Union effort to counter Confederate forces, it was one of the first all-black units organized by the federal government. The regiment saw action in several key battles, including Fort Wagner and Olustee, and contributed significantly to the eventual Union victory in the war. Despite initial challenges due to limited resources and training, the 1st U.S. Colored Infantry demonstrated bravery and resilience throughout its service. The regiment was mustered out of service in July 1865 following the end of the Civil War.
