Description:

A shield blazoned: Azure, on a fess sanguine fimbriated Or, a gopher sejant of the third; in chief, a five-pointed mullet of the last. Attached below the shield is a yellow scroll inscribed "FOR STATE AND COUNTRY" in black.

Symbolism:

The device reflects state traditions. The blue shield alludes to the state flag and represents the Infantry color. The star and gopher symbolize the state, with the star taken from the state coat of arms and representing the state motto "L'Étoile du Nord" (The North Star). The gopher, the state nickname, reinforces this connection. The fess’s colors—maroon and gold—are derived from the state colors.

Background:

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 206th Infantry Regiment on November 27, 1925. It was redesignated for the 256th Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion on November 18, 1952, and for the 216th Air Defense Artillery Regiment on February 24, 1998.
