The 31st Fighter Wing is a unit of the United States Air Force, primarily responsible for air defense and offensive operations. Based at Aviano Air Base in Italy, the wing operates under the U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa (USAFE-AFAFRICA) command. The 31st Fighter Wing's aircraft fleet primarily consists of the F-16 Fighting Falcon and the F-35 Lightning II. The wing's mission includes providing air defense for NATO allies, as well as conducting joint and combined operations with other military branches and international partners. The wing's history dates back to 1948, making it one of the U.S. Air Force's oldest fighter wings.
