Description/Blazon
A blue square, featuring three white stripes, running diagonally from the upper left (heraldic sinister chief) to the lower right (dexter base). The entire design is enclosed within an Army Green border.
Symbolism
The three white stripes represent the three major operations in which the division participated during World War I. The blue field symbolizes the loyalty and self-sacrifice of those who defended American ideals of liberty and democracy.
Background
The insignia was originally approved for the 3rd Division by telegram on 24 October 1918 and officially announced on 20 June 1922. The description was amended on 11 October 1922 for clarity. It was redesignated for the 3rd Infantry Division retroactively to 1 August 1942, with the addition of the border included in the description.
