Description/Blazon:

A shield blazoned: Per fess vair and Argent, in base a thistle Proper. Above the shield, from a wreath Argent and Azure, a demi-lion rampant Gules grasping in its dexter claw a sword Or. Attached below and to the sides of the shield, a gold scroll inscribed "DEFENDIMUS" in red letters.

Symbolism:

The vair on the shield represents the Coast Defenses of New York. The thistle, emblematic of Lorraine and featured on the arms of Nancy, is also associated with the area near St. Mihiel. The crest, taken from the arms of St. Menehould, is depicted in red to signify Artillery. The motto translates to "We Defend."

Background:

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 59th Artillery Regiment on August 15, 1930. It was redesignated for the 59th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion (Automatic Weapons) on November 23, 1953. The insignia was redesignated for the 59th Artillery Regiment on December 5, 1958, and for the 59th Air Defense Artillery Regiment effective September 1, 1971.
