The 6th Armored Division, also known as the "Fighting Sixth," is a historical armored division of the United States Army that was first activated during World War II on July 15, 1942, in Fort Knox, Kentucky. The division saw significant action in Europe, particularly in the Normandy landings and the Battle of the Bulge. It was deactivated on August 16, 1945, following the end of World War II. The division's primary role was armored warfare, utilizing medium tanks such as the M4 Sherman. The 6th Armored Division was organized into three regiments: the 30th, 31st, and 32nd Tank Regiments, each with three battalions. Additionally, it had a reconnaissance troop, an anti-aircraft battery, a field artillery battalion, an engineer battalion, and support units for supply, medical, and other services. During its time in the European Theatre, the 6th Armored Division was part of the Third Army under General George S. Patton. The division played a crucial role in various battles, including the breakout from Normandy, the liberation of Paris, the Battle of the Bulge, and the drive into Germany. After World War II, the division was deactivated and has not been reactivated since. However, its legacy lives on as one of the U.S. Army's most decorated divisions.
