Albert Sidney Johnston was a prominent American military officer who served as a general in the Confederate Army during the U.S. Civil War. Born in 1803, he had previously served in the United States Army for over three decades, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he resigned from the U.S. Army and joined the Confederacy, becoming one of its highest-ranking officers. On April 6, 1862, Johnston met Union forces led by General Ulysses S. Grant in the Battle of Shiloh, which was one of the largest engagements of the war. Despite initial success, he was mortally wounded during the second day of the battle and died later that day. His death marked a significant loss for the Confederate cause as he was one of their most experienced generals at the time. Johnston's military career spanned both the Mexican-American War and the U.S. Civil War, making him a significant figure in American military history. The battle he lost at Shiloh has become known as the "Battle of Johnston's Defeat" or simply "The Battle of Shiloh," highlighting the impact of his leadership on this crucial conflict.
