Albert Sidney Johnston was a prominent American military officer who served as a general in the Confederate Army during the U.S. Civil War. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he resigned from the U.S. Army and joined the Confederacy, becoming one of its highest-ranking officers. On April 6, 1862, Johnston met Union forces led by General Ulysses S. Grant in the Battle of Shiloh, which was one of the largest engagements of the war. Despite initial success, he was mortally wounded during the second day of the battle and died later that day. His death marked a significant loss for the Confederate cause as he was one of their most experienced generals at the time.
