Alexandria, Va. Soldiers' Cemetery (U.S. Civil War) The Soldiers' Cemetery in Alexandria, Virginia, is a historic military cemetery established during the U.S. Civil War. Originally named the Alexandria National Cemetery, it was initially used to bury Union soldiers who died while being treated at nearby hospitals or while in captivity as prisoners of war. It later expanded to accommodate Confederate soldiers and civilians who died after the Battle of Alexandria in 1862. Today, the cemetery is a significant historical site, serving as a reminder of the sacrifices made during the Civil War. It is also home to over 3,000 graves and several notable burials, including that of John Wilkes Booth's brother, Edwin Booth. The Soldiers' Cemetery, which has been added to the National Register of Historic Places, continues to be well-maintained by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.
