Arlington House, located in Virginia, was initially built as a home for George Washington Parke Custis, the grandson of America's first president. Later, it served as the residence of Confederate General Robert E. Lee from 1857 until the Union Army occupied it in 1861 at the onset of the American Civil War. The house was officially named Arlington House after being built on land that once belonged to Robert Arlington, a British army officer who acquired it from the original 10,000-acre Virginia estate given to Washington by King Charles III in 1752. The property, now managed by the National Park Service, is a significant historical site, preserving a rich legacy that spans more than two centuries and bearing witness to events during the U.S. Civil War.
