Battle of Gaines' Mill, Va. (U.S. Civil War) The Battle of Gaines' Mill, fought on June 27, 1862, during the American Civil War, was a significant engagement in the Seven Days Battles campaign. It took place near Gaines's Mill and Chickahominy River, in Henrico County, Virginia. The Union Army, under Major General George McClellan, attempted to outflank the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia led by General Robert E. Lee. Despite initial successes, the Union forces were repelled by the Confederates, resulting in a tactical victory for the Confederacy and a strategic stalemate. The battle is notable as one of the bloodiest single-day battles in the Civil War.
