Beaufort, South Carolina – Robert Barnwell Rhett's Residence refers to a historic property located in Port Royal, Beaufort County, South Carolina, USA. The residence was once the home of Robert Barnwell Rhett, a prominent figure in the antebellum era and an influential pro-slavery advocate who also served as a U.S. Congressman and the governor of South Carolina before the American Civil War. The property holds significant historical importance due to its association with Rhett and his role in South Carolina's secession from the Union, which ultimately led to the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War. While the exact dates of construction are unknown, the house was built between 1830 and 1845. After Rhett's death in 1864, the house passed through several owners before being acquired by the state of South Carolina in 1972. Today, it stands as a preserved landmark and museum, offering visitors a glimpse into the life of one of the key figures of the Civil War era. The property is also part of the National Register of Historic Places.
