The Battle of Brandy Station, fought on June 9th, 1863, was the largest cavalry battle of the Civil War and occurred near the town of Brandy Station in Culpeper County, Virginia. General John Henry Hobart Ward, a Union officer, commanded the First Corps, Army of the Potomac's Cavalry during the battle. Despite the Confederate forces outnumbering the Union's during the fight, the Union was able to successfully defend their position and prevent a major Confederate offensive into Union territory.
