Brigadier Major General Rufus Saxton was a high-ranking Union Army officer during the American Civil War. Born on October 26, 1809, he served as a major general in the United States Colored Troops (USCT), leading many African American regiments in various battles and campaigns throughout the conflict. Saxton was also notable for his role in implementing the Port Royal Experiment, which aimed to promote education and self-sufficiency among freed slaves on the Sea Islands of South Carolina. He died on March 23, 1897.
