City Point, Virginia is a historical site significant for its role during the American Civil War. Named after a nearby railroad junction, it was the location of Union Army headquarters under General Ulysses S. Grant from July 1864 to April 1865. During this period, President Abraham Lincoln frequently visited the site, making it an important hub for strategic planning and decision-making during the closing stages of the war.
General Rufus Ingalls served as a Union army officer during the Civil War, specifically at City Point. He held the rank of brevet major general in the Regular Army. While his service at City Point is not extensively documented, it is known that he played a part in the logistical operations and strategic planning conducted there under General Grant's command.
The site today offers historical tours, educational programs, and preservation efforts to maintain its significant historical value as a witness to pivotal moments during the American Civil War.
