Civil War Contraband (U.S. Civil War)
The term "contraband" during the U.S. Civil War referred to enslaved people who had escaped from Confederate-held territory and sought refuge behind Union lines. Once under Union control, these individuals were considered as "contraband of war," a status that exempted them from being returned to their former owners. This policy was initially implemented by General Benjamin F. Butler in May 1861 and subsequently formalized by the U.S. government. The contraband system played a significant role in the eventual emancipation of enslaved people during the Civil War, providing a legal basis for their freedom and contributing to the erosion of slavery in Confederate territory.
