A turtle swimming in the base of the shield represents the Pacific Ocean surrounding Fiji. Atop the shield sits a royal crest with a crowned Fijian warrior (Tui Viti) holding a war club (tamasica) and a British lion wearing a coronet, symbolizing Fiji's dual indigenous and colonial heritage. The motto "Unity in Diversity" is written below the shield in Fijian ("Vere vakaviti san tailale") and English.
