Kagnew Station refers to a former U.S. military communication facility located in Asmara, Eritrea, East Africa. Established during the Cold War era in 1952 by the United States Army Signal Corps, its primary function was to intercept and analyze Soviet military communications for intelligence purposes. The station's strategic position made it a key player in global communication networks due to its proximity to the Middle East and the Horn of Africa. Kagnew Station operated until 1977 when it was closed following Eritrea's independence from Ethiopia. Today, portions of the old facility have been converted into commercial spaces, while others remain abandoned as a testament to its historical significance.
