The National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) was a United States government organization responsible for collecting, analyzing, and distributing geospatial intelligence to aid the U.S. military and other government agencies. Established in 1996, NIMA combined various mapping-related functions from multiple departments and merged with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) in 2003. The agency's primary focus was on creating and maintaining maps, satellite images, charts, and graphs to support national defense and disaster response efforts. NIMA used various technologies, such as satellites, aerial photography, and geographic information systems (GIS), to gather data and produce accurate, timely, and actionable intelligence products.
