Description:

A a shield blazoned: Per bend Gules and barry wavy of eight Or and of the first, with a pineapple of the second in chief. Below and to the sides of the shield is a black scroll inscribed with "CAVEAT OPPUGNATOR" in gold letters.

Symbolism:

Red and yellow are traditional colors for Artillery. The pineapple signifies service in Hawaii, while the barry wavy pattern represents the Pacific Ocean and service in the Western Pacific during World War II. The motto, "CAVEAT OPPUGNATOR," translates to "Let the Oppressor (Hostile One) Beware."

Background:

The distinctive unit insignia was initially approved for the 180th Antiaircraft Artillery Gun Battalion on May 21, 1952. It was redesignated for the 174th Artillery Regiment on January 6, 1961, and the motto was corrected on June 16, 1969. The insignia was redesignated for the 174th Air Defense Artillery Regiment on February 9, 1973.
