Description/Blazon A green disc with a yellow border. Centered on the disc is a yellow trumpet bound with a gray cord, with the mouthpiece pointing upward. The trumpet is placed in front of and extends above a green scroll with three loops, edged in yellow. The scroll bears the word "Brave" to the left and "Rifles" to the right of the trumpet, with the numeral "3" in gray just below the trumpet bell.
Symbolism The design mirrors the Regiment's distinctive insignia. The green and yellow (gold) trumpet references the Regiment's founding in 1846 as the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen, which featured uniform facings in green and a gold trumpet insignia. The words "Brave Rifles" are taken from the accolade given to the Regiment by General Winfield Scott for its bravery at the Battle of Chapultepec during the Mexican War. The gray color of the letters and numeral symbolizes steel, reflecting the Regimental Motto "Blood and Steel," derived from the same accolade ("Brave Rifles! Veterans! You have been baptized in fire and blood and have come out steel."). The shoulder sleeve insignia has been worn by the Regiment since 1944, with approval by General George S. Patton, Commanding General of the Third United States Army and the 28th Colonel of the Regiment (1938-1940).
Background The insignia was initially approved for the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment on June 12, 1967. It was redesignated for the 3rd Cavalry Regiment effective November 16, 2011, with an updated description.
