Symbolism
The blue field signifies the Infantry affiliation of Tanks. The testudo, an ancient Roman formation of joined shields providing protection and mobility, symbolizes the characteristics of a Tank unit. The three gold shields represent the testudo, while the Roman sword signifies offensive power. The motto translates to "In All Things Undaunted."
Background
The distinctive unit insignia was initially approved for the 321st Tank Battalion on 20 May 1924, redesignated for the 309th Tank Regiment on 3 June 1931, and later for the 420th Infantry Regiment on 16 November 1932. The insignia was rescinded on 2 February 1959.
