Background:

The coat of arms was originally approved for the 517th Coast Artillery (Antiaircraft) Regiment on March 9, 1937. It was redesignated for the 78th Coast Artillery (AA) Regiment and amended to remove the crest on November 2, 1940. The insignia was later redesignated for the 78th Antiaircraft Artillery Gun Battalion on June 23, 1949, and for the 78th Antiaircraft Artillery Missile Battalion on June 19, 1956. It was redesignated for the 517th Air Defense Artillery Regiment on December 29, 1958.
