The 5th Infantry Regiment, often abbreviated as the "5th Inf. Reg." or "5th Infantry," is a U.S. Army regiment within the United States Army Infantry Branch. It is one of the oldest and most decorated regiments in the Army, with a history dating back to 1678 during the French and Indian War. The regiment has seen active service in numerous conflicts including the American Revolution, the Mexican-American War, both World Wars, the Korean War, and Operation Iraqi Freedom among others. Its primary role is to conduct and support ground combat operations as part of a combined arms team. The 5th Infantry Regiment is currently part of the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas.
