71st Evacuation Hospital refers to a United States Army field hospital that played a significant role during the Korean War. Activated on April 25, 1948, at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, this mobile medical unit was equipped to provide general surgical, orthopedic, and medical care for wounded soldiers. During the Korean War (1950-1953), the 71st Evacuation Hospital served in various locations along the front lines, including Inchon, Pyongtaek, Munsan-ni, and Kumsong. With a capacity of 250 beds and staffed by military doctors, nurses, technicians, and other medical personnel, it was instrumental in treating and saving thousands of soldiers from both allied and enemy forces. In recognition of its service during the Korean War, the 71st Evacuation Hospital was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. After the war, it continued to serve in various capacities until it was deactivated on September 30, 1965, at Fort Lewis, Washington. The history and legacy of the 71st Evacuation Hospital remain significant in the annals of military medicine and the U.S. Army's response to conflicts during the Cold War era.
