Albert Sidney Johnston was an American military officer who served as a general during the U.S. Civil War. Born on February 2, 1803, in Washington Parish, Louisiana, he is best known for his leadership of the Confederate Army during the early stages of the Civil War. Before the war, Johnston had an impressive military career with the U.S. Army, serving in both the Second Seminole War and the Mexican-American War. He rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a major general in the U.S. Army. In 1861, upon the outbreak of the Civil War, he decided to join the Confederate States Army. Johnston was appointed as the first General-in-Chief of the Confederate Army, but he saw his most significant action at the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee, where he commanded the Confederate army's Western Department. Despite early successes, Johnston was killed on the first day of the battle, making him the highest-ranking officer to die in the war on either side. Johnston's legacy is marked by his significant contributions to the Confederacy during its earliest days. He is remembered as a capable strategist and a dedicated military leader who lost his life in service to the cause he believed in.
