Beazell (U.S. Civil War) The term "Beazell" refers to a type of ironclad gunboat used during the American Civil War, specifically by the Confederate Navy. Named after Robert Beauregard Beazley, an engineer who designed these vessels, they were characterized by their single turret and a central wheelhouse. Despite their unique design, the Beazells faced various technical challenges and limited success in battle due to factors such as insufficient armor plating and propulsion issues. The only completed Beazell-type ironclad was the CSS Manassas, which saw service in several engagements before being captured by Union forces in 1865. These vessels represent a significant chapter in the naval history of the U.S. Civil War and showcase some of the ingenuity and challenges faced during that period.
