Hungary Country History Charles I (1310-1342) Charles Robert, also known as Charles I, was a King of Hungary and Croatia who reigned from 1310 until his death in 1342. Born in 1310, he was the son of King Andrew III and Beatrice of Bohemia. During his reign, Charles I faced numerous challenges, including internal conflicts with powerful magnates and external threats such as the Mongols and the Ottoman Empire. Despite these difficulties, he made significant contributions to the development of Hungarian institutions, notably by strengthening the central power of the monarchy and modernizing the legal system. He is particularly remembered for his efforts to reform the feudal land system, which laid the foundation for the later development of serfdom in Hungary. Charles I died on October 16, 1342, and was succeeded by his son Louis the Great. His reign marked a critical period in Hungarian history, setting the stage for the expansion of the Kingdom in the 14th and 15th centuries.
