Born on January 17, 1816, in Louisiana, Wigfall was an influential political figure before the war, serving as a U.S. Congressman from Texas and playing a significant role in Texas's secession. During the Civil War, he served under Generals P.G.T. Beauregard and Joseph E. Johnston, participating in key battles such as First Manassas and Seven Days Battles. Wigfall was wounded at the Battle of Second Manassas and resigned from the army in 1863 due to health issues.
