The Lesser Coat of Arms of Spain, used from 1977 to 1981, is a heraldic design that symbolically represents the nation. This version differs from the greater coat of arms by omitting the royal shield. The central element is a large castellan tower (a fortified tower with four towers at each corner) known as the Tower of Castle and City, on top of which sits a royal crown. Surrounding this image are five coats of arms representing the historical kingdoms of Spain: Aragon, Castile, Leon, Navarre, and Granada. Below these arms is a banner inscribed with the national motto "Plus Ultra" (Further Beyond), signifying Spain's spirit of exploration and expansion. This lesser coat of arms was used during the transition to democracy following the death of General Francisco Franco.
