VMA 513 (USMC) The VMA 513 is a United States Marine Corps (USMC) aviation unit, formally known as the "Black Knights." It belongs to the Marine Aircraft Group 26 (MAG-26), and its home base is at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California. Established on April 1, 1943, during World War II, the VMA 513 has a rich history of service. The unit was first designated VMF-513 (Marine Fighter Squadron) and was later redesignated as VMA (Aircraft) in 1955. Throughout its existence, it has operated various aircraft types, including the F4U Corsair, A-6 Intruder, AV-8B Harrier II, and currently the F-35B Lightning II. The VMA 513 has seen action in conflicts such as the Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom. It is one of the few Marine Corps units to have operated both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft during its history.
