VMM 266 Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 266 (USMC) VMM 266, officially known as Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 266, is a United States Marine Corps aviation unit under the command of Marine Aircraft Group 39 and Marine Air Wing 1. The squadron operates MV-22 Osprey aircraft, a multi-mission tiltrotor that combines the ability to take off and land vertically like a helicopter while also having the speed and range of a fixed-wing airplane. Established in 1943 as HMX-266 during World War II, VMM 266 has seen service in numerous conflicts and peacekeeping missions. The squadron is currently based at Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina. Its primary role is to provide the command element of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) with medium tiltrotor aircraft for rapid reactionary forces projection and vertical enabler support. VMM 266 is an integral part of the United States Marine Corps' aviation assets, contributing to a wide range of operations and missions in support of national defense objectives.
