The Old Capitol Prison, 1st and A Streets NE (U.S. Civil War) The Old Capitol Prison, located at the intersection of 1st and A Streets NE in Washington, D.C., served as a military prison during the U.S. Civil War. This historic site was initially designed to house the United States Congress but was converted into a prison due to its proximity to the Capitol building when the Union forces occupied the city. The Old Capitol Prison housed Confederate prisoners of war and civilians, as well as some high-ranking Union officers accused of various offenses. Notable inmates included John Wilkes Booth and Dr. Samuel Mudd, both connected to the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. The site has since been transformed into part of the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center, where visitors can learn about its history as a crucial part of Washington, D.C.'s role during the Civil War.
