Description:
A shield with the following blazon: Gules, on a cross Or voided of the field, a saltire in fess Gray, fimbriated of the second, flanked by two fleurs-de-lis of the same. Attached below and to the sides of the shield is a gold scroll inscribed with "GLORY AND HONOR" in red letters.
Symbolism:
Scarlet and yellow are the traditional colors of Artillery. The voided cross of St. George represents the English colonization and development of Virginia and honors Grimes Battery, formed in Portsmouth in 1809, which is now part of the organization. The cross also references the War of 1812. The saltire symbolizes Confederate service during the Civil War. The two fleurs-de-lis represent service in France and Central Europe during World War II and also allude to the French Croix de Guerre with palm awarded for participation in the invasion of Normandy.
Background:
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 129th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion on September 22, 1955, and was canceled on March 23, 1960. It was reinstated and redesignated for the 111th Air Defense Artillery Regiment with revised symbolism on August 30, 1976.
