The 179th Infantry Regiment is a historic infantry unit within the United States Army. Originally formed during World War I, it was one of the seven regular regiments raised in the National Army. The regiment saw action in the Battle of St. Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. Post-World War I, the 179th Infantry Regiment was stationed at various U.S. locations before being inactivated in 1940. It was reactivated during World War II as part of the 45th Infantry Division and fought in the European Theater, particularly in the Rhineland Campaign and Central Europe Campaign. The 179th Infantry Regiment was again inactivated after World War II but reorganized and federally recognized in 1956 as part of the Arkansas Army National Guard. Since then, it has been involved in various domestic operations and training exercises. The regiment's motto is "First to Fight" and its shoulder sleeve insignia features a silver shield with an Indian head on the front, symbolizing the Cherokee heritage of some of the early soldiers who served in the unit.
