Description:

A shield blazoned: Gules, between two fleurs-de-lis in fess, a sheathed Roman sword, point down, Or, overlaid by a cross patée Argent charged with a blue disc bearing the number 9. Attached below and to the sides of the shield is a gold scroll inscribed "RATIONE AUT VI" in black letters.

Symbolism:

The red shield represents Artillery. The white cross patée denotes the 2d Division, 5th Corps, and the white disc represents the 2d Division, 1st Corps of the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. The disc is blue for contrast and adherence to heraldic rules, symbolizing Infantry service. The sheathed Roman sword, derived from the Spanish War service medal, signifies the unit's service within the continental United States during the Spanish-American War. The fleurs-de-lis commemorate the service of the 1st Trench Mortar Battalion and the 57th Artillery, Coast Artillery Corps, in France during World War I. The number 9 represents the regiment’s designation from its formation in 1859 until 1924. The motto translates to "By Reason Or By Force."

Background:

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 244th Coast Artillery Regiment on March 23, 1936. It was amended to delete the motto on May 23, 1936. It was redesignated for the 244th Artillery Regiment on August 3, 1962, and amended to add the motto on August 29, 1968. The insignia was redesignated for the 244th Air Defense Artillery Regiment on July 6, 1972.
