'2d Rhode Island Infantry 022 (U.S. Civil War)': The 2nd Rhode Island Infantry, commonly referred to as the 2nd Rhode Island Volunteers or the "Color-Bearer's Regiment," was a military unit serving in the United States Army during the American Civil War. This infantry regiment, designated as the 022nd, was raised in response to President Abraham Lincoln's call for volunteers in April 1861. The unit consisted of nine companies, each made up of around one hundred men from various towns across Rhode Island. The 2nd Rhode Island Infantry saw action in several significant battles throughout the Civil War, including First Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. Notably, it was the first Union regiment to be commanded by an African American officer, James T. Harris, during the Battle of Olustee in Florida in 1864. The regiment was mustered out of service in August 1865 after the Confederacy's surrender at Appomattox Court House. The legacy of the 2nd Rhode Island Infantry continues to be celebrated for its contributions to the Union cause during the Civil War. Many of its members were decorated for their bravery and valor, and their stories serve as a testament to the sacrifices made during one of the most pivotal periods in American history.
