3rd Marine Division (USMC) The 3rd Marine Division, a part of the United States Marine Corps (USMC), is one of three divisions within the organization. It was initially activated in February 1941 and played a significant role during World War II, particularly in the Pacific Theater. After the war, it was deactivated but reestablished in December 1946. The division is headquartered at Camp Courtney, Okinawa, Japan, with a secondary headquarters at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, Oahu. It falls under the command of III Marine Expeditionary Force (III MEF). The 3rd Marine Division's primary mission is to provide a ready, deployable force for crisis response and theater security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. The division consists of approximately 20,000 Marines and Sailors from various units, including the 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, and supporting combat service support units. The units under its command are stationed across Japan, Guam, Hawaii, and the continental United States. Throughout its history, the 3rd Marine Division has participated in numerous significant operations, including the Korean War, Vietnam War, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom.
