Symbolism:

The red field signifies Artillery. The pile represents a searchlight beam targeting the enemy in the sky, depicted by the dragon. The black arrow symbolizes gun and machine gun fire from the ground.

Background:

The coat of arms was originally approved for the 917th Coast Artillery Regiment on August 7, 1935. It was amended to add symbolism on October 7, 1935. The insignia was redesignated for the 70th Coast Artillery (AA) Regiment on January 19, 1940, and for the 70th Antiaircraft Artillery Gun Battalion on April 15, 1946. It was further redesignated for the 562d Artillery Regiment on December 11, 1958, and for the 562d Air Defense Artillery Regiment effective September 1, 1971.
