The 69th New York Infantry Regiment is a historical military unit of the United States Army that saw active service during the American Civil War. Originally formed in 1847 as the 69th New York State Militia, it was federalized and redesignated as the 69th New York Volunteer Infantry in May 1861 when New York Governor Edwin D. Morgan responded to President Abraham Lincoln's call for troops to suppress the Southern rebellion. The regiment served primarily in the Eastern Theater, participating in numerous significant battles including First and Second Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. Renowned for its discipline, courage, and strong Irish immigrant heritage, the regiment earned the nickname "Fighting 69th." After the war's end in 1865, the 69th New York Infantry was mustered out of service on June 23. Over the years, the legacy of the 69th New York Infantry Regiment has been celebrated for its contributions to preserving the Union and maintaining national unity during one of the most tumultuous periods in American history.
