Description:

A black wavy scroll at the base inscribed with the motto "DEFENSORES BOREAE" in gold letters. Supporting the scroll are two gold Burmese griffins, crouching back to back, with a gold five-pointed star centered above their heads. The star issues a circlet of red rays throughout.

Symbolism:

The colors scarlet and gold represent Air Defense Artillery. The two Burmese griffins, adapted from the seal of the Republic of Burma, symbolize the unit's service in World War II. The gold star, placed at the top to represent the North Star, refers to the flag of Alaska, where the Group is currently stationed. The red rays signify the Aurora Borealis, a northern sky phenomenon, highlighting the unit's Air Defense mission. The motto translates to "Defenders of the North."

Background:

The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 87th Artillery Group on August 26, 1969. It was redesignated for the 87th Air Defense Artillery Group on April 4, 1972.
