Alexander Stephen Davis Stephens (February 11, 1812 – December 4, 1883) was an American politician who served as Vice President of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. Born in Taliaferro County, Georgia, he served as a U.S. Representative from 1843 to 1859 and later as a Confederate congressman. Known for his eloquence and intellectual ability, Stephens was a central figure in the secession of the Southern states leading up to the Civil War. He is perhaps most famous for his speech at a joint meeting of Congress on March 21, 1861, in which he proclaimed that the Confederate States "had no right to do wrong, as we claim they had no right to do right." This statement is often misconstrued as a justification for slavery, although Stephens' actual stance on the issue was more complex. After the war, he returned to Georgia and lived a private life until his death in 1883.
