Alford Burrill Chapman was a Union army officer during the American Civil War. He served in the 57th New York Infantry Regiment, specifically Company 001. Born on August 18, 1832, and raised in New York City, Chapman enlisted as a private in the Union Army in September 1862 at the age of 30. He eventually rose through the ranks to become a First Lieutenant and served under several commanders including General George Gordon Meade during the Battle of Gettysburg. His military career ended after he was wounded during an attack on Fort Fisher, North Carolina in January 1865. After the war, Chapman returned to New York City where he died on June 29, 1887.
