Benjamin H. Grierson was a major general who served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Born on October 12, 1826, in Port Gibson, Mississippi, he attended both West Point and the University of Mississippi before his military career began. Grierson is most notable for leading an 800-mile raid through Confederate territory in Mississippi and Tennessee from April to June 1863, which aimed at disrupting Confederate communication and supply lines.
