Chickahominy River, Va. Military Bridge The Chickahominy River Military Bridge was a strategically important structure built during the American Civil War. This bridge, located in Virginia, was constructed by the 15th New York Volunteers, under the leadership of Colonel John McL. Murphy. The construction of this bridge played a significant role in the Peninsula Campaign, a series of Union operations in Virginia that took place from March to July 1862. The bridge's construction and subsequent defense were critical to the Union's efforts to advance further into Confederate territory and ultimately influenced the outcome of several key battles during this campaign. Despite its historical significance, the original bridge has not been preserved; however, it continues to be an important symbol of the Civil War's military engineering feats and the perseverance of the 15th New York Volunteers.
