The Coat of Arms of Malta is a heraldic symbol representing the Mediterranean island nation. It consists of a shield divided into five parts, symbolizing the five orders of the Knights of St. John who ruled Malta for over 200 years. The top left quarter displays an eight-pointed cross on a white background, symbolizing the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem. The remaining quarters depict a red and white saltire (St. George's Cross) in the top right, three red castles on gold in the bottom left, eight red mullets (five-pointed stars) on silver in the bottom right, and a red lion rampant on gold in the center. The whole is surrounded by a green wreath of bay leaves at the base and a Garter with the motto 'Pro Rege et Leone' ('For King and Lion') above it. The shield is supported by two lions, one reguardant (facing the viewer) and the other passant guardant (facing left), both holding a golden chain link between them. The Coat of Arms was officially adopted in 1942, following Malta's independence from the British Empire.
