Flag of Kainuu Finland The Flag of Kainuu Finland is a regional flag representing one of the 19 regions of Finland. It consists of a field divided diagonally from the lower hoist-side corner to the upper fly-side corner, with the upper part being yellow and the lower part blue. A white stylized sun with eight rays, known as the Koivisto cross, is centered on the dividing line between the two colors. The flag was designed by Veikko Koivisto in 1982. It incorporates the traditional Koivisto cross symbol, which is a variant of the Scandinavian solar cross, symbolizing the region's Finnish heritage and its long history under the Swedish crown. The color scheme reflects the landscape of Kainuu, with the blue representing its numerous lakes and rivers, and the yellow symbolizing its forested areas. As a regional flag, the Flag of Kainuu Finland does not hold any official status within the Finnish government or legal system but serves as an emblem of local identity and pride for the people of Kainuu.
