The U.S. 99th Infantry Division is a military formation within the United States Army, established during World War II on July 10, 1942, as part of the effort to expand the army's ground forces. Also known as the "Canneyers," due to their French Lorraine cannon insignia, the division saw active service primarily in the European Theater of Operations against the Axis powers. The 99th Infantry Division was disbanded on December 15, 1945, following the end of World War II but was reactivated as a reserve division during the Cold War and remains an important part of the U.S. military history. The division's campaigns included the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, Central Europe, and Normandy, where it participated in the D-Day landings.
