Washington, District of Columbia. Brazilian Steamer 001 (U.S. Civil War) The Washington refers to a Brazilian steamer that was pressed into service by the Union Navy during the U.S. Civil War. Initially named 'Brazilian Steamer 001', it was later renamed 'Washington'. This ship, which was previously used in the Brazilian Imperial Navy, was captured off the coast of Nassau in the Bahamas in August 1864. The Washington played a significant role during the Trent Affair, an international incident involving the Confederate diplomats James Mason and John Slidell on board the British mail steamer RMS Trent. After the U.S. Civil War, it was returned to Brazilian ownership in 1866. This historical vessel symbolizes the complex relationships between nations during times of conflict, particularly during the U.S. Civil War and beyond.
