1 Special Forces (U.S. Army) The U.S. Army's 1st Special Forces Regiment, colloquially known as "The Lion of the United States" or simply "1 Special Forces," is an elite special operations force under the U.S. Army Special Operations Command (USASOC). Established on July 27, 1952, its primary role is conducting unconventional warfare, direct action, counter-terrorism, foreign internal defense, special reconnaissance, and other special operations as directed by the President and Secretary of Defense. These highly trained soldiers are capable of operating independently or in conjunction with conventional forces, often behind enemy lines to engage, advise, train, and accompany indigenous military forces. Their unique skill set includes language proficiency, cultural sensitivity, and an ability to function effectively in austere environments. The 1st Special Forces Regiment is one of the five Army special forces groups, along with the 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 10th Special Forces Groups.
