The 102nd Infantry Division is a military formation that served in the United States Army during World War II, the Korean War, and the Cold War era. Originally activated in September 1940, it was composed of National Guard units from Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. During World War II, the division saw action in Europe, particularly in the North Apennines and Po Valley campaigns of Italy, where it contributed to the Allied forces' advance towards Germany. After the war, the division was deactivated and later reactivated for the Korean War as part of the 7th Infantry Division. In the Korean War, the 102nd Division fought on the front lines from February 1951 to July 1953, engaging in significant battles such as Heartbreak Ridge and Old Baldy. Following the end of the Korean War, the division was once again deactivated and reorganized several times before being redesignated as a combat support unit in 1968, responsible for logistical support during peacetime and in wartime. Throughout its history, the 102nd Infantry Division has received numerous honors, including the Presidential Unit Citation with four oak leaf clusters and the French Croix de Guerre with Palm. The division's motto is "Stay Low."
